The Grilled Cheeserie

We finally found it.

When you hear about food trucks in Nashville, one keeps coming up as the King (or Queen; no need to be gender-specific, I suppose): The Grilled Cheeserie. We had seen it once, outside of Porter Flea Market, but the line spanned most of the parking lot, passing several other, lesser food trucks along the way. Because of the heat and the long wait (plus, we had already eaten lunch), we gave up and moved on, determined to keep up with its course over the next few days and catch it at another, more convenient location.

Enter Movies in the Park.

We had no particular desire to go to Movies in the Park. They were showing Despicable Me 2, which we had already seen, and it was across town. However, the movie was a side point, a pleasant addition to my wife's real purpose: finding The Grilled Cheeserie. In fact, we found out about the movie because of her following the truck on Facebook. In another twist of fortune, the movie was free, meaning we were getting exactly what we wanted without having to pay an entrance fee.

The truck is black and yellow, and generally when it's around, a line of hungry people is sure to follow. It doesn't need a catchy jingle to announce it's arrival; it has mobs of people to do that. Luckily, though, when we arrived at the movie, we were early, so there wasn't a line. We only had to wait on one other person to order, miraculously, before we could do the same. The food was out fast, and we enjoyed it on a picnic table behind the inflated movie screen, in the shade of a large tree.

My wife ordered one with cheddar cheese and caramelized onions, with a side of tomato soup, and I had mine with pepper jack, tomatoes, and pickles. I could tell you that they were fantastic, delicious, and perfectly crispy and buttery. I could tell you that they were the best grilled cheeses I'd ever had, and that I probably won't try to make grilled cheese ever again because I would know that it just wouldn't compare. But I don't need to tell you (even though I just did, essentially), because it's a logical fact that if food is being served out of the back of a truck, and it's doing so successfully enough to draw crowds of dedicated followers wherever it goes, then whatever is coming out of that truck has to be good. The demand wouldn't be there if the food wasn't amazing, and it wouldn't have been recommended to us from everyone who had had it while in Nashville. Like so many things in Nashville, the hype is there for a reason.

So, find the Grilled Cheeserie, have the best grilled cheese of your life, and then realize that food trucks are ironically here to stay.
